ROUND 5: July 11, 2010
Round five was back at Glen Helen after being away since the opening round back in March. This time when riders showed up they were a little shocked — the course layout had JUMPS! Glen Helen had hosted the USGP World Championship motocross a few weeks earlier and the course was left almost the same. There were sections with multiple lines, big tables, step-ups, step-downs and a variety of other obstacles to overcome. It was definitely one of the more challenging tracks Glen Helen had provided in awhile. And the racers seemed to love it! Something else new was the use of scoring transponders at this race. You can now go to the race results online and see just how fast you were compared to other riders and classes.
Moto 1: Dustin Nelson has taken almost every holeshot this year and he did it again at round five. He took the holeshot and never looked back. Beau Baron pushed hard but Nelson continued to increase his distance over second place, lap after lap. Back in the third spot was Justin Noss holding off Jason Dunkleberger in fourth. At the end of 20 minutes plus two laps, Nelson took the checkers with a comfortable lead. Baron was second and Noss third. In a nutshell it was a very uneventful race.
Moto 2: This one started out the same, but finished much different. Once again Nelson took the holeshot but this time Baron was pretty close. As they rounded the second corner and headed up the first hill something happened to Nelson and Baron beat him to the top. But at the end of the first lap Baron was limping on a flat tire and Nelson was nowhere to be seen. Dunkleberger had taken over the lead with Noss and Jason Fife right behind. Baron quickly went to the pits to change the tire and was back on the track, but down one lap. Nelson got his quad going and joined back in two laps down and proceeded to set the fastest lap time, only to stop again a few laps later with electrical problems. Baron made up his lost lap but that's all. In the end it was Dunkleberger with the win, Noss second and Fife third. With Nelson and Baron both having problems, this gave the others a chance to make up some valuable points.
The next round goes back to Glen Helen on August 15, 2010. We'll see you there.
